⚠️ This blog post is not finished and is a work in progress. Along with being really poorly written, it also stops making any sense towards the end. ⚠️ *non-programmable scientific calculator Introduction What is Turing completeness? An Example Introduction As an A-level student, I am at the mercy of JCQ – the Joint Council for Qualifications – for what I am and am not allowed to do during my exams.

In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Notes Introduction What is deep work? Spending a long amount of time alone and working hard on a problem. People have made big progress on important things in isolation. Jung had a tower that he worked in while trying to beat Freud' theories. Bill Gates has think weeks where he’d spend 2 weeks with no technology, just reading and thinking “big thoughts”. A knowledge worker is someone who’s job requires them to think for a living: programmers, doctors, scientists, lawyers, academics.

Personal Thoughts This was a great book! I read the whole thing in three days! It felt like a practical version of [[Thinking, Fast and Slow]]?? , but taken from a more self-help direction and written by a member of the rationalist community. There wasn’t much beating around the bush, it was pretty direct the whole time and stated things very, very clearly. I also liked how she included a bunch of examples and that the examples didn’t have any particular bias.

Replacing Guilt is a series of essays by Nate Soares about replacing guilt-based motivation with “intrinsic motivation” – a drive to do good in the world. I listened to the podcast version of it, which was produced by Gianluca Truda who makes the [[Bit of a Tangent]]?? podcast. I neglected to take notes the first time around which was a mistake but it was still very useful to listen to. Bold titles are episodes or posts that I especially enjoyed.
